Do You Have Questions About Your Leaking Roof?

Updated: Apr 14, 2022

No one likes to see it - the tiny drips you've started to notice around the window frames on a rainy day or the discoloration on the ceiling that's now hard to ignore. It's human nature to just wish it away and ignore the problems. Honestly, we get most of our calls from homeowners who have done just that. No one likes dealing with a leaking roof, no matter if it's a big or small leak. So, how do you know when your leaking roof needs attention? When does a leaking roof need to be replaced and not just repaired? What are the best proactive steps when you spot that first leak?

Prodigy Roofing is here to answer your leaking roof questions and we're here to offer solutions for what’s best for your unique situation!

When a homeowner finds a leak in their roof, no matter how big or small, our first professional tip is to address the problem as soon as possible. The problems that come with a leaking roof only increase, the longer you wait. But what is the best course of action to fix the leak? Can it be patched? Is it possible to just fix a particular section of roof? Is replacement the only way to go? Every leaking roof is different, so there really isn’t a black and white answer to any of these questions. Follow along below with what our Prodigy Roofing experts have to say about different recommendations for different leaking roof scenarios.

Will it fix the leak if I just have the roof patched?

A simple patch fix would be ideal for most homeowners. It’s a smaller job, cheaper and less time-consuming than most roof repairs. In some cases, a patch may be the answer to fixing the problem if it is a small leak that was caught early enough. Our Prodigy Roofing professionals will come to your home for a free inspection to determine if a roof patch/repair is right for your leaking roof.

The main issue with a roof patch solution is that a patch only covers a small area and could actually make it harder to spot spreading damage until it is too late. We would only consider a patch solution if we were certain there was no other structural problems caused by the leak.

When would Roof Replacement be necessary?

When you call a roofing company for a roof inspection due to what seems like a tiny, barely noticeable leak, it is hard to hear when the recommendation leans to a roof replacement as a solution. It is important to remember that the tiny leak you’re now noticing is just the first problem you noticed in a system that is largely hidden from view. Unfortunately, when a homeowner does notice, even a tiny leak, it usually means there is already water damage growing out of sight to make the structure of your roof vulnerable. Unattended roof leaks bring water damage into the home and every water damage issue that comes with that.

Patches will not effectively fix every issue, such as:

  • Undiscovered leaks and damage

  • Sagging or pooling

  • Cracked, curled, damaged, or missing shingles

  • Flashing issues

  • Frequent leaks

So, you’ve found a leak in your roof. What now? What could a little leak really do?

As a homeowner, the smaller a leak is, the easier it is to pretend it wasn’t seen. It is important to remember that even the tiny drips and leaks have the potential to wreak major havoc on your living space.

A leaking roof can lead to serious problems such as:

  • Damage to essential structures

  • Mold and mildew growth

  • Introducing water damage to other parts of the home’s structure

The roof patch covers only a small area of the roof that's why i didn't use patch while doing roof repair at all.
